Working Dog Training.

 
Warragul Dog Club have the facilities to assist owners training their working dogs to work stock.

Training is conducted on the 1st and 3rd sunday of every month. Please refer to our 'contact us' page if you have any questions.
 
Generally speaking, this Club deals with those breeds typically used for working stock in a farming situation, such as Kelpies, Border Collies, Koolies and similar "heading" type breeds.  We do not bar "cross bred dogs" from training per se.  If the dog appears to be largely one of the working breeds or a mix of those breeds, and it has the necessary temperament, you may be allowed to work with the sheep.

However, all dogs commencing training with us must be assessed by the instructor as having a suitable temperament and working instinct.  Please note.  Just because you have a "Sheep dog", don't expect to be let loose on our stock without supervision.  There is no appeal to this provision.  If an Instructor considers your dog is too harsh or does not have the necessary temperament, you may not be allowed to work with the stock.

Trials
The Club conducts a Working Dog Trial under the Rules of the Victorian Yard Utility Farm Dog Association during late March or early April each year.  There are 4 or 5 levels of dog/handler available as well as "ducks";

City Slickers (Learner handler)
Required to work 4 or 5 sheep from one yard, into another, then through a race and back to the start.

Encourage
Required to work sheep from the paddock through a set of yards and races.  We award a memorial trophy for this event each year, in memory of our Member, Scott Northover.

Novice
Required to work a number of sheep from the paddock through a more complex course consisting of yards and races.

Improver
The course of yards and races is more complex.

Open
The most complex of courses and judging meets a higher standard.

Ducks
The dogs may also work ducks at our trials.  The dog must be skilled with the sheep - the ducks can exaggerate problems that the dogs exhibit.  The dogs cannot bite the ducks.
